LITTLE ROCK – The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Arkansas is excited to announce the appointment of John C. Williams as the new Legal Director, effective November 2023. Williams brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to civil liberties, making him an ideal leader for the ACLU's legal efforts in Arkansas.

A graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School and Swarthmore College, Williams has a distinguished career advocating for justice and civil liberties. Before his new role, he served in various capacities at the Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Eastern District of Arkansas, including as Chief of the Capital Habeas Unit and First Assistant Federal Public Defender. His expertise in litigating capital habeas petitions and appeals, coupled with his extensive experience in civil rights litigation, positions him perfectly to lead the ACLU of Arkansas's legal team.

Williams's professional journey is marked by significant contributions to public service and advocacy. His experience ranges from being a reporter focusing on politics and government to teaching classes on lawyering skills and capital punishment. He has authored several publications on vital legal issues.
