Today in the Federal Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis, Missouri, the American Civil Liberties Union defended the trial court’s order granting a preliminary injunction which prevented House Bill 1570 (H.B. 1570) law from going into effect.
If the Supreme Court issues a majority opinion that follows the leaked draft it would deprive half the nation of a fundamental, constitutional right.
The Feb. 17 ruling, issued in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas, held that private citizens may not sue to protect their voting rights under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), reasoning that only the U.S. Attorney General may bring a case under the statute.
